The death of the analogue television set was officially confirmed , nearly 85 years after John Logie Baird held his first public display of the capabilities of the box in the corner of the living room that has tranformed our lives.
All the major high street electronics retailers have now stopped selling analogue sets after quietly running down their stocks in recent months, in preparation for the switch to digital terrestrial television (DTT) by 2012.
Last month, for the first time, there were no sales of analogue TV sets in the UK, according to figures published today by the organisation responsible for helping viewers switch.
Arab
news network
Al Jazeera
Arab news network Al Jazeera will begin broadcasting its English news channel on Britain's Freeview free digital platform Thursday, making the U.K. its biggest English-speaking market for free television.
The network, which has branched out into several channels and the Web since being founded as an independent Arabic news channel in 1996, will reach 80 percent of Britain's 25 million households.
Al Jazeera English is already available on satellite platforms Freesat and Sky in Britain, and reaches about 200 million homes worldwide, mostly on pay-TV platforms.
The network, which is based in Doha, aims to provide an alternative view of international news to those provided by other, Western global news providers like the BBC or Time Warner's CNN.
The sometimes dissenting views of the network, which was best known in the West for broadcasting hostage videos and messages from Al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden, have caused controversy in many Middle Eastern countries.
Al Jazeera English was launched in 2006.

The Digital Switchover involves the turning off of the analogue terrestrial transmitter network and it's replacement with new digital terrestrial network. This is all due to be completed sometime during 2012. After switchover more features and programmes will become available and many of us will be viewing these in High Definition with on-demand features at our disposal. Choosing the right service providers and deals shouldn't be a problem. You can get all the information you need about switching to digital TV here.
